Kirubel Assefa

Kirubel Assefa Kebede was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He had the privilege of attending one of the prestigious schools in Addis Ababa, St. Joseph. The love of music was implanted in him when he started using utensils as drumsticks. The seed of music grew and blossomed at the St. Joseph school band, where he played drums. During those early years, he made his childhood dream come true to play the drums at all cost. Today he is a multi-instrumentalist and a class act at any event. He moved to the U.S. to further develop his music and his talent, while attending college he played with various bands ranging from Reggae, Cuban rhythms Funk and world music. His ability to grasp musical tunes at any setting and turn it into heart touching and unforgettable melody is well known within the bands circles. It is this talent that allowed him to play with such renowned bands Rhythm Africa, Groove Fact, GIGI Mahmoud Ahmed, Aster Aweke ,Teodros Tadesse and Majek Fashek.

After he moved to the U.S., Kirubel picked up bass and started playing with local bands in the bay area and Los Angeles. while working odd jobs to make a living. Kirubel started taking his music to a different level by going to school at Musician Institute . Kirubel has arranged, directed, and performed with different arrays of musicians and bands in different music genres. Kirubel has a deep knowledge of recording,film scoring and being a musical director.

Kirubel is multi instrumentalist, (keyboards, drums and bass) and has composed music for his band, Lasta Sound, which he wrote 85% of the music. Lasta Sound got some recognition when they were portrayed in a movie called “Journey to Lasta” which depicts the life of the Lasta Sound members. Kirubel and the other band member did a great job acting as themselves in the movie. Kirubel has composed music for the IMAX documentary, “Mystery of the Nile” and has worked as sound designer for several commercial projects. Kirubel is currently working on his another exotic project, which brings the Ethiopian music to a different level.
